Mapping allows you to see what a value is stored as and what it is displayed as.  This will assist you when you want to explain what a field is, but the name of the field is not particularly descriptive.  For example, a value may be stored as an abbreviated word or figure in your database.  You can choose to display the full word in the report so that you can easily see what the contents of the field will be.
